Brock Purdy, 49ERS QB Injuries Destroy Team's Hopes

Tragedy struck the 49ers' offense in their Sunday contest with the Philadelphia Eagles when QB Brock Purdy left the field due to injury during the team’s very first drive of the game. Purdy’s arm was struck by Eagles Haason Redick, while attempting to throw the ball. Initially, the hit seemed to be nothing out of the ordinary, so it is safe to say that everyone was equally as shocked when the quarterback made his exit. Purdy proclaimed that the injury he was dealt had carried extreme pain. Based on the look from the replay and Purdy’s words regarding his arm, it may be possible that it is a nerve injury. Obviously, without a healthy arm, Purdy then was not able to throw and travel back onto the field. This setup 49ers fourth-stringer Josh Johnson to enter play. Just when you thought the QB situation of this team could not get any crazier. In case you have never heard of Johnson, he is a 36-year-old quarterback who has been a member of the league for quite some time now. He has played for fourteen different teams while in the NFL. Entering this game marked his first-ever playoff appearance in his career. I wish I could say his performance was any more eventful than it turned out to be. To wrap up Johnson’s rather subpar performance, the QB suffered an injury to the head and exited the game. This game was turning out to be a nightmare for the 49ers, who had no other choice than to put an uncertain Purdy back into the game. This move was risky, but it also proved to be no better than playing Johnson. Purdy was mostly seen running the ball from this point forward, and when he did decide to throw, the pass was no more than four yards or so. The sole running game of the 49ers was not enough to establish a solid performance, with the Eagles' defense not letting up much. This running game also contributed to the depletion of the game clock, which also worked in the favor of the Eagles. With the game concluding 38-7, the 49ers were left with nothing more than the thought of ‘what could have been?’ if only things had gone differently.
